Energy Optimization
What is Energy Optimization? Energy Optimization is not the same as Energy Conservation where you go without to save. Instead it is a way to use less energy to achieve the same result, such as replacing a 60 watt conventional light bulb with a 13 watt CFL bulb instead. Both bulbs give off the same amount of light but the CFL does it for less, 78% less. The same holds true for appliances. Replacing your old refrigerator with a newer more energy efficient model keeps your food cold for less. By insulating your hot water heater and pipes you will be able to save without having to turn the water temperature down. These are just a few ways Cherryland Electric Cooperative helps our members Optimize and save on their utility bills.
Cherryland Electric Cooperative has been working with our membership for many years to help its members save money, but in the fall of 2008 the Michigan legislature passed the "Clean, Renewable and Efficiency Energy Act" (Public Act 295) requiring ALL electric utilities, and all regulated natural gas utilities, in the state of Michigan to implement Energy Optimization programs for their members. The programs are designed to reduce the energy use of participating members by encouraging investment in energy efficiency measures.
Funding this government mandated program is not cheap. To help defray the costs of the program the State of Michigan allows the utilities to charge a surcharge on their bills. Because Cherryland Electric Cooperative is Member Regulated we are able to keep this cost to a minimum on our members' bills.
Below is more information about the Energy Optimization programs offered to the members of Cherryland Electric Cooperative.
