One of the questions I hear frequently from Cherryland members is: How can we conserve on energy used by our water heater.
I have a checklist I’ve compiled that will help you save money and conserve energy.
Here it is:
Thermostat
1. Settings – Normally 120 degrees top and 115 degrees bottom.
2. Function – Check water temperature at a non-scald proof hot water tap. If it is hotter than the thermostat setting, replace the top thermostat.
Insulation
1. Location – Water heaters located in cool areas will consume more energy than water heaters located in warm areas.
2. Insulation – Poorly insulated water heaters, in particular older or less expensive models, can use 30 to 50 percent more energy. Internal components vary little across most water heaters; insulation is a key factor in determining efficiency.
3. Air Leaks – Make sure your inspection covers are in place with insulation behind them.
Trouble Shooting
1. Not Enough Hot Water – Usually means the bottom element is burned out.
2. Luke Warm Water – Generally means the top element is burned out.
3. No Hot Water – Mostly caused by a bad top thermostat.
4. Cleaning – Removing mineral deposits that often accumulate in the hot water heater tank will improve efficiency and result in fewer elements burning out.
Reducing Your Electric Bill
1. Install shower heads to reduce the amount of hot water consumed – 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute as compared to 5 gallons per minute.
2. Wash more clothes in cold water, which saves 25 to 30 gallons of hot water per load.
3. Take shorter baths and showers.
4. Circulating pumps can consume significant amounts of energy.
5. Jacuzzi use causes higher consumption.
