Putting Signs On Utility Poles Is Unsafe, Illegal

Attaching signs or other items on utility poles creates serious safety hazards. Signs, and the staples, nails, and tacks used to attach them, pose dangers to lineworkers who must climb poles to restore power after storms or perform maintenance to ensure system reliability.

Birdhouses, balloons, flags, and even basketball nets can also create dangerous obstacles. And, the nails and tacks left behind can snag a lineworkers’ boots or puncture safety clothing, making them vulnerable to slipping or electrocution.

Tampering with utility poles by attaching objects can also be costly, because it’s illegal. Consumers are encouraged to contact local zoning officers to inquire about where signage can be posted legally.
